Bowls A Sport For Young People
Bowls was played in the village long before the formation of the Garden Village Association in 1959. However its image of being an old man's game has deterred many younger members from participating in the sport. This may all be about to change with the emergence of a new joint initiative being shown by North Tyneside Council and Northumberland County Bowls Association to develop bowling youth recruitment, training programmes and youth leagues.
Coaching courses for junior players will be organised for local clubs and an empasis will be placed on inclusion - developing playing opportunities for both the able bodied and the disabled.
The initiative will provide clubs with publicity material promoting junior bowling and clubs will be encouraged to create a junior development officer position in their organisation.
Ken Dobson of our own club has already identified an interest in the game from the youngsters in Garden Village.
Clubs are being encouraged to relax their dress codes, introduce colourful woods and identify sources of equipment suitable for junior players.
In the longer term, the initiative wants to provide a pathway for young talented bowlers from club level to county and international level. It aims to develop a School of Bowling Excellence for the North East.
The English Bowling Association (EBA), is behind the development. Wayne Manley, EBA President, said:
"There is no doubt in my mind that the future of the game can be enhanced by a further and continued influx of youth and I give my wholehearted support to the initiative being shown by the Northumberland County Bowls Association and North Tyneside Council in providing a School of Excellence for Bowls."
