THE L.N.E.R. (GOSFORTH GARDEN VILLAGE) LTD HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE

The scheme was eventually managed by a registered charity (and thus avoided tax) which after 1921 became the LNER (Gosforth) Garden Village Ltd. (The NER itself became amalgamated into the London and North Eastern Railway in 1921).

This limited company had it's registered office in the Estates Department of the LNER in York and its chairman had to be a nominee of the railway company.

The final draft of the rules of the Society was accepted by the Registrar of Friendly Societies central office on the 16th April 1925 and included the following part "object" from Rule 2 :- " to buy, sell, hire, let and develop land situate within the County of Northumberland, in the City and County of Newcastle upon Tyne and not elsewhere; to provide, improve and manage and sell to its members either for cash or by instalments of principal and interest houses within the said Counties and not elsewhere for the working classes" A prcis of a further rule stated:- "The Society shall consist of the Trustees of the LNER Housing Trust and/or the London and North Eastern Railway Company and all such other persons being present or past railway employees. Every member shall hold at least one share in the society."
