THE L.N.E.R. (GOSFORTH GARDEN VILLAGE) LTD HISTORY OF THE VILLAGE

The fields behind Hollywood - now largely the Cheswick Drive area was owned by the L.N.E.R. and held for possible expansion of the Car Sheds. In the meantime part of it was utilised as:-

Metro line Car Sheds a) a football field with a very basic facility for changing, played on by an active and popular Car Sheds Football Team who were well supported on Saturday afternoons by the villagers. The original ' Sports Pavilion' can still be seen on Charlie's allotment. A children's annual sports event also took place in this field.

    b) a sports field for children complete with football posts (I wish we had it now!). Off to one side of this football pitch were swings (one for the 'big uns' and one for the 'little uns') Also on this field we had a fireworks display on Guy Fawkes Night. The display was organised by the adults near the bonfire built by the kids. Sadly I have to admit that some of the wood was acquired as a result of organised raids on other bonfire piles. The favourite target was the 'Pitties' who lived in the Pit Village - now the Hunters Court etc. area. Incidentally, alongside the pit village was a massive slag heap which we skirted in all weathers on our way to school. There was also a derelict winding house with a large tall chimney attached and the entrance to the mine shaft. The vent to the shaft can still be seen.
